About
Katherine Minton, PhD, M.S.Ed
Welcome to Minton Learning Services. I’m Dr. Katherine Minton and I have learned during the past 30 years that there isn’t a “one size fits all” approach anywhere that helps all individuals who are experiencing learning difficulties. I’m a native Oregonian who has worked throughout the United States and in British Columbia. I have extensive experience with people who have had a head injury or have had on-going problems with learning disabilities, dyslexia, or behaviors commonly called “ADD”.
I completed my undergraduate degree at Coe College in Iowa, master’s at Baylor University, and PhD at the Union Institute and University. My interdisciplinary doctoral program combined advanced work in educational diagnostics with the biosocial issues that affect learning. My approach to learning difficulties is unique because I realized early in my career that labels such as “dyslexia” or “ADD” can prevent us from determining what may be one or more of the root causes of a learning disability.
It is vital to approach learning problems with the broadest possible view. A truly comprehensive case analysis must take into consideration not only diagnostic testing, but a thorough screening for possible problems with vision, hearing, nutrition, physiological/biochemical imbalances, head injury, exposure to toxins, teaching methods and classroom environments, and cultural/social influences. An important part of my work is to consult with other professionals when indicated and I may suggest a referral to another highly skilled practitioner as part of a team working to find the best solutions for you
My approach involves a comprehensive case analysis, which includes a careful review of all evaluations, diagnoses, and other information from professional help you have already received, whether at school or from a private practitioner. I am then ready to work with you in two ways. First, I provide academic therapy on a one-to-one basis, teaching you how to create and use core strategies and methods that truly work in the real world for you. Occasionally it may be more helpful for you to work with a small group if you are comfortable with that. Secondly, I work with you to provide integrated case management so that we are keeping careful track of your progress in order to determine the next steps. This is especially important if you are seeing other professionals for different kinds of treatment or consultation.
If you are looking for a unique approach that has been proven to work successfully for many others, please phone or email Minton Learning Services today.
